The Nimue Water Quality Monitoring Smart Buoy won the 2024 BIG SEE Product Design Award in the Product Design category, representing Hungary. The buoy was designed by Liza Feil, a student at Budapest Metropolitan University. Nimue is an innovative, intelligent device that monitors the quality of natural waters, playing a key role in creating a cleaner and more livable aquatic environment.
The device’s unique design focuses on intuitive usability, aesthetic value and circular economy principles. The buoy’s modular design allows for disassembly and recycling at the end of its life cycle, promoting sustainability, said a statement from Budapest Metropolitan University.
One of the most striking features of the buoy is the large handle on top, making it easier to put the buoy in and take it out of the water from boats, docks, and shores.
The development of the product has included a comprehensive analysis of the use, transport, storage, installation, and assembly of water quality monitoring equipment, which has provided the basis for the buoy’s innovative solutions.
Liza Feil’s work is an exciting example of the sustainable water quality monitoring of the future, and the recognition of the BIG SEE Award confirms the place of Hungarian designers on the international stage.
“I am grateful for this project because it has given me the opportunity to solve a real problem of a working industrial company, within my professional possibilities and abilities. The function of the product had to be communicated in a clear and understandable way not only to the users, but also to other actors in the aquatic environment, such as boaters and bathers.
The award itself is positive feedback that confirms to me that what I do has a place and value in the world,”
emphasized the award-winning designer.
