Although adverse weather and flooding had a negative impact on domestic tourism, Hungary remained a popular destination for travelers in the ninth month of the year. In September, the number of visitors from abroad increased to nearly 767,000, up 10 percent year-on-year, the Ministry for National Economy said.
According to data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) and the National Tourism Data Supply Centre (NTAK), nearly 1.5 million people used the services of accommodation establishments in September 2024, up two percent year-on-year.
The share of international visitors in Budapest was 87 percent, and the number of foreign guest nights in the capital was 1.2 million, an increase of 15 percent.
Budapest is therefore attracting a high level of interest from international travelers.
Based on the latest KSH data, the Ministry for National Economy expects that in 2024, the performance of the tourism sector will surpass last year’s record-breaking results.
According to the available data, 14 million guests arrived at domestic accommodation establishments in the first nine months of 2024, which corresponds to a 10 percent increase compared to 2023. The number of guest nights has already reached 35 million, an increase of five percent.
Data shows that Hungary’s attractiveness continued to grow in September, according to the ministry. They stressed that tourism is a strategically important sector and a key pillar of Hungary’s economy, making a significant contribution to GDP growth and providing a livelihood for the 400,000 people working in the sector. In order to increase the performance of the sector, the government has launched sector programs worth HUF 15 billion (EUR 36.9 million) to improve the quality and competitiveness of hospitality establishments.
