Budapest University Joins the International Astronautical Federation

The International Astronautical Federation (IAF) has elected the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) as a member in recognition of its achievements in space research and space science at an international level. NASA and the European Space Agency are also members of this prestigious organization, reports Index.

Founded in 1951, the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) is the largest international organization in the field, bringing together the major players in space research and activities – space agencies, space companies, space research associations, museums with space exhibitions, and universities with space education.

Currently, it has 563 members from 80 countries, with BME being the third Hungarian institution and the first Hungarian university (the two previous members are the Hungarian Astronautical Society and Remred Space Technologies).

At BME, several research groups are engaged in space-related activities.

In the summer, its own development small satellite MRC-100 2023 was placed in orbit around the Earth, and its experts contributed to the European Space Agency’s Hera probe, launched on October 7.

The knowledge and experience gained in space technology will also benefit students of the Master of Aerospace Engineering, which started in 2022.

The recruitment process was initiated by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics of Budapest University of Technology and Economics and approved by the IAF General Assembly on October 14 at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan.

In the future, BME students will be able to participate in space engineering competitions organized by the IAF, and space science teachers will be able to further strengthen their international contacts.

The Space Communications and Navigation Committee has elected Dr. László Bacsárdi, associate professor, BME Department of Network Systems and Services, as its Vice-Chairman for a three-year term. Dr. Bacsárdi has been a member of the committee since 2014, representing a Hungarian organization, and in recognition of his work in the field of satellite quantum communications, he has been appointed as one of the leaders of the more than 30-member professional body, now representing the full IAF member, Budapest University.
