Budapest Airport’s Passenger Traffic Breaks Record Once Again

Hungary Today 2024.10.17.

This year, passenger traffic at Liszt Ferenc International Airport could break all previous records. By the end of September, the airport handled almost as many passengers as it did all of last year, reveals a VINCI Airports press release on commercial aircraft movements.

As Airportal.hu reports, in the first three quarters of this year, a total of 13 million 22 thousand passengers were handled at the airport, an increase of 7.8 percent compared to the same period in 2019, and 19 percent compared to last year.

In 2023, the number of passengers at Budapest exceeded 14.7 million for the entire year, a figure already reached in the first nine months of this year.

The number of aircraft movements was 2.3 percent higher than the record year of 2019.

Liszt Ferenc Airport registered 5,161,000 passengers in the third quarter, up 9.9 percent on the same period of the record year in 2019, and 20 percent more than last year. The airport recorded 35,683 take-offs and landings in the third quarter, up 17 percent on the same period in 2023, and four percent more than in 2019.

The release highlights that Budapest’s routes to major European capitals were particularly busy in the third quarter, thanks to significant increases in seat availability by the two main airlines,

  • Wizz Air with 32 percent
  • Ryanair with 22 percent.

Fact

As reported by Hungary Today, after almost 20 years, the Liszt Ferenc International Airport is back in majority state ownership. Following more than a year of intensive negotiations, the sale and purchase agreement of Budapest Airport Ltd. was finally signed in June this year. The deal of Budapest Airport Ltd.’s purchase was concluded with an international group of vendors, including AviAlliance (German airport operator), GIC (Singaporean sovereign wealth fund), and CDPQ (Canadian pension fund). The sale transaction was a record size by Central European standards. In proportion to the purchase price, the Hungarian State acquired an 80 percent stake for EUR 2.48 billion, while the French co-investor VINCI a 20 percent stake for EUR 620 million in Budapest Airport Ltd.  VINCI Airports is responsible for the  operation of the airport under the strategic guidance of the Hungarian state.
