A recent episode of the public media’s TV program, HadERŐ – I Serve My Country, highlighted Hungary’s advancements in defense, focusing on two prominent aircraft: the KC-390 Millennium and the C-17 Globemaster III.
As honvedelem.hu reported, the program showcased their operational importance and the modernization efforts of Hungary’s air transport capabilities.
The Brazilian-made KC-390, which Hungary acquired for its military transport fleet, was piloted for the first time by Lieutenant Colonel István Asztalos, a veteran pilot with 4,500 flight hours.
In 1987, I even visited the USSR during my pilot training. Since then, I have flown MiG-21s, MiG-29s, Gripens, and now the KC-390.
Every new aircraft introduces you to a new flying culture, which is why it’s such a great experience,” the Lt. Colonel said, reflecting on his career. The arrival of the KC-390s has added significant capability to Hungary’s air fleet.
Alongside the KC-390, the C-17 Globemaster III was also featured. Known from the movie screen, the C-17 is primarily involved in military and humanitarian missions. Hungary houses three C-17s at the Pápa Air Base (western Hungary) as part of the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW), a collaborative effort of 12 countries. HAW ensures the transport and deployment of troops and cargo across long distances without requiring intermediate landings.
According to Sergeant Major Péter Gotthárd, “the primary task is airlifting cargo and soldiers to their destinations without landing.”

The KC-390 and C-17 exemplify Hungary’s commitment to strengthening its strategic airlift capabilities. With skilled personnel like Lt. Col. Asztalos leading the charge, Hungary is well-positioned to meet future defense challenges.
