Motorway Network Reaches the Level of Western Countries in Terms of Population

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.10.16.

In the past 15 years, Hungary has built as many motorways of which the level of development of the national road network is equal to that of Western countries in terms of population, Bálint Nagy, State Secretary of the Ministry of Construction and Transport, said on Tuesday, at the 7th Hungarian Transport Conference and 48th Road Days.

The politician pointed out that while six million people could reach a 2 x 2 lane road network within 30 minutes in 2010, by 2023, nearly 8.5 million people can reach a 2 x 2 lane road network within the same amount of time. In the past few years, Eger (northern Hungary), Szolnok (central Hungary), Salgótarján (northern Hungary), Sopron (northwestern Hungary), and Kaposvár (southwestern Hungary) have been connected, he noted.

According to him, 21 cities with county status can already be reached by 2 x 2 lane roads, and in 2025, this number will increase to 22 when a dual carriageway will also reach Békéscsaba (southeastern Hungary).

In the last 15 years, we have built four Tisza bridges and four Danube bridges, and I am pleased to announce that the preparation for the construction of the Danube bridge in Mohács (southern Hungary) has already started,”

he emphasized.

Fact

A 756-meter-long bridge is being built by Duna Aszfalt between Mohács and Újmohács, Hungary’s southernmost bridge over the Danube, as part of a project by the Ministry of Construction and Transport. The development also includes the construction of 28.8 kilometer of main road and a framework structure between the M51 expressway and the M6 motorway.

As the State Secretary underlined, the government’s commitment to road development can also be seen in the shorter term. In just under two years, more than HUF 600 billion (EUR 1.4 billion) worth of investment has been handed over, including 25 kilometers of dual carriageways and some 155 kilometers of main roads and other developments.

More significant than this figure, however, is the fact that there are currently 15 projects under construction with a total value of over HUF 1,318 billion (EUR 3.2 billion),”

emphasized Bálint Nagy.

The politician also noted that it was unfair that while transport was much discussed in the press and on social media platforms, opposition politicians were using the issue mainly for their own political purposes. “They have been the most vocal critics of the issue, but when they have had the opportunity, they have done nothing to solve the problems, but at best they made plans,” he concluded.
