At the launch of the Századvég Riport 2024 in Budapest, Balázs Hidvéghi, Parliamentary Secretary of State of the PM’s Office, articulated Hungary’s commitment to a pro-European policy, emphasizing the importance of lively public discourse on critical issues.
The politician countered accusations of Hungary being anti-European by asserting that the country offers a more open and diverse debate on EU matters compared to many Western European nations.
Mr. Hidvéghi expressed concerns about the European Commission, characterizing it as an unelected, bureaucratic entity that often oversteps its authority and infringes upon Member States’ prerogatives. He criticized the political environment in Brussels, where dissenting opinions are frequently censored, leading to a crisis of legitimacy.
He highlighted the exclusion of the Patriots for Europe (PfE) group in the EP, which, despite being the third-largest grouping, is marginalized for challenging the mainstream narrative.
The discussion also touched upon migration and family policies. Balázs Hidvéghi noted that the majority of Europeans reject migration as a solution to demographic challenges, advocating instead for policies that support families. This sentiment aligns with findings from a survey revealing that two-thirds of Europeans believe population issues should be addressed through family support rather than immigration.
The survey results underscore a growing skepticism towards EU governance, with 65% of Hungarians believing Europe is heading in the wrong direction.
A significant portion expresses a desire for more power to Member States and prioritizes family values over migration.
Hidvéghi’s remarks reflect Hungary’s commitment to advocating for a Europe that respects national competencies and focuses on the needs of its citizens.
