Villány Red Wine Festival Awaits Visitors with a Colorful Cavalcade of Programs

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.10.04.

Concerts, family programs and traditional events, a harvest parade, and new wines are awaiting visitors at this year’s Villány Red Wine Festival between October 4 and 6.

The biggest wine, gastronomic, and cultural festival of one of the best-known wine regions in Hungary is being held for the 36th time this year. For three days, from Friday to Sunday, events will take place from the wine cellars’ street to Villány’s Rendezvénytér (event square), where, in addition to various musical performances, traditional demonstrations, and the harvest parade, cultural and gastronomic delights will be offered.

Of course, the best wines of the region will also be on offer for visitors to taste, according to the festival website.

In addition to concerts, there will be a harvest parade, presentations by wine-growing associations, a cooking competition and food tasting, cellar tours and visits, and a ceremonial tapping of barrels.

The Villány wine region is the southernmost winegrowing region in Hungary and one of the most developed wine-producing regions in the country, with around 2,100 hectares under cultivation. Thanks to its altitude, its climate provides excellent conditions for the ripening of grapes: it is Hungary’s warmest and sunniest wine region, with long dry summers and long growing seasons. The Villány region has two major settlements with different production profiles: Villány is famous for its fiery red wines and modern technology, while Siklós is a slightly less popular white wine region.

The Villány red wines are dark ruby in color, full-bodied, rich in aromas and flavors, high in alcohol and tannins.

The most sought-after Hungarian red wines and the popular Kékfrankos cuvées are mainly made from the grapes grown here. The fiery white wines of Siklós are Olaszrizling, Tramini, and Muscat Ottonel.
