Ferencváros’s Close Match against English Star Team Tottenham Ends in Defeat

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.10.04.

Ferencváros (also known as Fradi) lost their second game in the UEFA Europa League‘s first leg, as the Hungarians were beaten 2-1 at home by English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur FC on Thursday.

The visitors took the lead in the 23rd minute through Pape Sarr, before substitute Brennan Johnson scored a goal in the 86th minute. The Hungarian team added a 90th minute equalizer through Barnabás Varga, but like last week in Belgium, they were unable to triumph.

Ferencváros will host French side OGC Nice in the third round of the Europa League on October 24.

Ferencváros started with great energy and dangerous action, but Tottenham came back to life after about ten minutes. First there was a big missed opportunity for young Will Lankshear, then Dénes Dibusz saved Sarr’s shot. In the 16th minute, the stadium exploded for a moment when Varga’s corner found the net, but the international striker’s header was ruled out for a close-range foul.

Shortly afterwards, Tottenham took the lead immediately after a defensive error.

The English team continued to play more dangerous football, with Ferencváros only able to try long balls, but the scoreline remained unchanged until the break.

A few minutes after the break, Matheus Saldanha’s shot was saved by the visitors’ goalkeeper, followed by chances for the English, but the score gap did not increase.  The Londoners’ game was more confident and they did not settle for the result, giving Ferencváros the opportunity to make some counter-attacks.

Brennan Johnson, who came on as a substitute, looked to have settled the match with a fine shot in the 86th minute.

However, in the 90th minute, Varga scored with a superb move, but there was no further chance for the home side in the five-minute extra time.
