The Hungarian government’s economic development program in Vojvodina, Serbia, was launched to provide prosperity for the Hungarian minority in the region, aiming to curb emigration by offering economic stability at home.

As part of the program, significant investments were made in agriculture, industry, and tourism, resulting in a more competitive local economy and the inclusion of Vojvodina on the tourism map of Europe.

Levente Magyar, Parliamentary Secretary of State, highlighted that the program has already injected about HUF 200B (EUR 533M) into Vojvodina’s economy, benefiting thousands of local families. He stressed the program’s contribution to technological advancements in local companies. Speaking at a contract signing event for nearly 700 farmers, he noted, “we celebrate that Hungarians belong together.” He further acknowledged the challenging global circumstances due to war and inflation, stating,

we are continuing this program in difficult circumstances.”

The Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (VMSZ) has been a key supporter of the program from the beginning. The late István Pásztor, former president of the VMSZ, had emphasized the importance of supporting the local economy alongside cultural initiatives. His son, Bálint Pásztor, the current president, expressed gratitude for continuous operation despite international difficulties.

He also mentioned that tourism developments have benefited not only major cities but smaller settlements as well.

As Hungary Today earlier reported, the Hungarian government initially allocated HUF 50B (EUR 133M) for the program’s first phase (2016-2018), focusing on agriculture, tourism, and SMEs (small and middle enterprises) to reverse youth migration. The second phase, launched in 2019, continued to support local businesses, despite challenging economic conditions.

The program’s success, reflected in its continued expansion, underscores the Hungarian government’s commitment to fostering long-term stability for Hungarians in Vojvodina.
