Hungary is well-prepared for winter, with six billion cubic meters of natural gas stored in high-capacity facilities, according to the Ministry of Energy.
For 2023, the population’s consumption is projected at just over three billion cubic meters, nearly double the available reserve. Last year, the economy required about 5.5 billion cubic meters of gas, and current storage levels exceed this, indicating that over 70% of the 8.5 billion cubic meters consumed last year was available before the cold weather arrived.
By the beginning of September, 5.7 billion cubic meters, the same amount used in the previous heating season, had already been stored.
Estimates suggest that annual gas consumption may fall below eight billion cubic meters this year, allowing reserves to cover an even larger share of actual demand. The EU has mandated a 90% gas storage target for member states by November 1, which Hungary achieved early, currently at 93%.
Hungary has traditionally been among the continent’s leaders in terms of filling rates in relation to consumption,” the ministry noted.
It also highlighted the reliability of supply through uninterrupted imports and domestic production. “Families have long had access to the cheapest natural gas in Europe, thanks to cuts in the electricity bill.”
These measures will ensure that Hungarian households can maintain warmth at affordable prices during the upcoming heating season.
