Söndörgő’s latest album Gyezz has risen to the top of the World Music Charts Europe, claiming the number one spot for September 2024. This success is further amplified by the album’s release on the prestigious US label GroundUP Music.
According to Index, the band, which has roots in South Slavic musical traditions, has managed to blend these influences with contemporary European jazz, creating a standout album praised by the global jazz community.
The album Gyezz features a collaboration with world-renowned jazz saxophonist Chris Potter, whose contribution adds a new dimension to the band’s sound.
Söndörgő, founded nearly three decades ago, is known for its unique use of the tambura, a traditional instrument in Serbian and gypsy folk music, as well as their constant search for innovative musical directions. According to London Jazz News, the album presents a refreshing take on the European jazz scene.
The collaboration with Chris Potter came about unexpectedly, when the band met him at a house party. Although Potter was initially surprised by the differences in musical styles, he quickly warmed to the idea, leading to the recording of Gyezz in less than 24 hours. Áron Eredics of Söndörgő explained that their connection with Michael League, the leader of Snarky Puppy, also played a key role in releasing the album under League’s label, GroundUP Music.
The album has garnered widespread acclaim from various publications like Jazzwise and Songlines, marking Söndörgő’s expansion from the world music scene into the global jazz community.
Its success not only highlights the band’s artistic evolution but also cements Gyezz as a significant work in contemporary jazz and world music. The album will be presented live to Hungarian audiences on November 15, 2024 at the Eiffel Műhelyház, the Hungarian State Opera’s special venue.
