Hungary among Europe’s Leaders in Solar Energy Production

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.09.30.

Hungary is among the European leaders in peak solar production, accounting for more than nine-tenths of electricity consumption in suitable weather conditions, the Ministry of Energy said in a Facebook post.

A third of EU countries are able to meet more than four-fifths of their instantaneous electricity demand with solar power. In Greece and the Netherlands, solar power plants not only meet, but sometimes exceed, current demand at the “darkest hours,” they said.

Hungary is among the top European countries in terms of peak solar production, accounting for more than nine-tenths of electricity consumption in the country under suitable weather conditions.

The post stressed that the future belongs to green energy, adding: “Thanks to the reliable operation of the Paks nuclear power plant, we are increasingly able to supply households, public institutions and factories with domestically produced green electricity from entirely carbon-free sources, more and more often and for longer periods of time. In addition to delivering on our climate commitments, we will also reduce our import exposure and the risks it entails.”

Fact

As reported by Hungary Today, in 2023 Hungary had the third highest share of solar power in electricity generation in the world and the second highest in Europe. The government is placing a strong emphasis on green transition, and has launched programs aimed at the public to encourage people to choose green energy. For instance, the Solar Energy Plus Program, with a budget of HUF 75 billion (EUR 195,3 million), gives individuals with privately owned residential properties the opportunity to to use non-refundable support for renewable energy sources.
