Hungary played a key role in inspiring the establishment of the Friends of Peace group at the United Nations that aims to foster international cooperation for peace, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
As Index reports, the group was initiated with the goal of bringing as many nations together as possible to work towards peace. Balázs Orbán, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Political Director, highlighted Hungary’s participation in this critical effort, noting that “Hungary attended an important meeting at the UN,” and emphasized the aim to create “the conditions for peace.”

He also pointed out that the group, led by China and Brazil, invited only three European countries: Hungary, France, and Switzerland.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed his support for Hungary’s initiative at the Friends of Peace meeting.
As Origo writes, the head of the Chinese diplomacy called the events in Ukraine worrying, lamenting that peace seems distant, and stated that the group’s objective is to amplify the voices of those advocating for peace. He congratulated Hungary for the idea of establishing a Friends of Peace group, but clarified that its purpose is not to align with any particular side, saying, “the international community should stand firmly on the side of peace.”
In Wang’s words, “we oppose using the crisis as an excuse” to introduce further sanction on Russia. “We want to be partners to Russia and Ukraine as they work towards peace,” he said after the UN meeting. “We must avoid a resurgence of a Cold-War mentality”, the Chinese politician added.
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó also spoke at the meeting, reiterating Hungary’s support for the Brazil-China peace plan and its readiness to work towards a negotiated solution in Ukraine. “The whole world is fed up with the inability of Europeans or the transatlantic community to put an end to this war,” he remarked, highlighting the frustration shared by many nations.
