Ferencváros (FTC, Fradi) suffered a 2-1 defeat to Belgian side RSC Anderlecht in Wednesday’s opening round of the UEFA Europa League‘s first leg in Brussels.
The home side took the lead in the 60th minute through Yari Verschaeren’s goal and six minutes later Kasper Dolberg increased the goal difference from a penalty. Ferencváros, who had the advantage in the second half, scored a goal in the 86th minute through Adama Traoré, but the score remained the same.
Ferencváros, who lost to a Belgian side in the Europa League for the first time in their history, will host English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur next Thursday at the Groupama Arena.
Ferencváros had the first dangerous chance, Traoré’s close range shot was blocked, but Anderlecht then took the initiative, with Dénes Dibusz having to be alert in the pouring rain. For a long period of time, the game was played almost exclusively in the Hungarian team’s half.
The match remained the same after the turnaround, with the Ferencváros attackers often in a vulnerable position, while the home side were able to weave their actions in peace. Anderlecht’s dominance was converted by the Belgian side in the 60th minute and six minutes later they doubled their lead.
FTC head coach Pascal Jansen tried to change the game by making three substitutions at the same time, but it did not work.

In the 81st minute, the hosts were down to ten men – substitute Nilson Angulo received two yellow cards in three minutes – and Fradi quickly took advantage, albeit with a poor move from Marko Šimić.
In the minutes of extra time, the Belgians confidently held on to their lead.
