The Slovak Nuclear Supervisory Authority and other authorities should increase their readiness to enable Slovakia to face a possible nuclear incident in Ukraine. This is the statement Slovak President Peter Pellegrini gave on Wednesday at a briefing for Slovak media at the United Nations in New York, reported standard.sk.
“The authorities of the Slovak Republic should now increase their alertness and be ready regularly measure the radiation level on the Slovak-Ukrainian border,” Pellegrini appealed. He warned that a possible Russian attack on Ukraine’s nuclear facilities could lead to a tragedy similar to the one at Chernobyl in 1986, and radioactive fallout could reach Ukraine’s neighbors.
Slovakia must therefore be independently prepared to take appropriate measures, said the Slovak President. He recalled that Slovakia, as a country with nuclear facilities, has professional and technological background so that it would not be dependent on information from from abroad, which.
“As an international community, we must exert maximum pressure on Russia to refrain from such dangerous actions,”
he added.
The statement comes only a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that his country would consider an attack from a non-nuclear state that was backed by a nuclear-armed one to be a “joint attack”. He has hinted at changing the rules and preconditions around which his armed forces could use nuclear weapons to defend against threats.
