This year’s Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe Annual Advisory Forum will be held in Visegrád, with almost 300 experts from over 40 European countries attending the three-day event starting on Wednesday, M1 news channel reported.

Máté Vincze, Deputy State Secretary for Public Collections and Cultural Development, said that the Council of Europe launched the Cultural Routes program in 1987. The program aims to raise awareness through travel of the common values that connect member countries, such as cultural, built and intellectual heritage. The routes included in the program are transnational, tourist itineraries with a website and an app, he added.

Hungary has 17 such routes. These include routes to spa towns and wine regions, where foreigners and Hungarians alike can get to know Hungarian gastronomy, architectural heritage, lifestyle and culture.

The politician noted that the Council of Europe’s expert forum on Cultural Routes is held every year, with Hungary hosting this year’s event after Poland. Next year’s event will be held in Türkiye. A total of 41 countries are participating in this year’s forum.

Máté Vincze highlighted:

Visegrád is an excellent location, as it boasts an archaeological heritage, a spa culture, as well as a natural heritage.”

Explaining the criteria for participation in the program, Máté Vincze said that a new applicant route should meet high standards, should involve at least three European countries to be accredited and should be preceded by serious scientific research. This year’s theme of the Visegrád forum is the importance of protecting cultural heritage and passing on the love of it to younger generations.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Innovation’s statement, 47 networks are currently certified as Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. Hungary joined the extended partial agreement on the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes in 2013, allowing Hungarian organizations and institutions (together with other member countries) to establish new routes and join existing ones.
