The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) will organize the 50th European Competition Day, one of the most prominent professional events in European competition law, where domestic and foreign experts will discuss the most topical issues of competition policy, said the authority.

According to the press release, the European Competition Day has been held every six months since 2000, traditionally organized by the competition authority of the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The event in Budapest on October 22 will have three main topics.

Competitiveness and sustainability have been at the heart of the European economic dialogue for many years, therefore it is essential to examine the competition policy aspects of these issues.

The Digital Markets Act, which came into force in May last year, is an EU regulation designed to complement competition law by ensuring that multinational platforms cannot abuse their market position. At the event, European competition law enforcers will discuss the experience and lessons learned from the application of the law so far.

The third main topic of the conference will be the opportunities and risks of using artificial intelligence (AI). According to the GVH, the rapid advance of AI makes it essential that the policy areas it will affect prepare for the potential consequences of its spread.

The GVH will also launch the latest volume of its series of books “Versenytükör” (“Competition Mirror”) in English at the conference.

The latest volume titled „Twenty Years of EU Competition Law in Hungary” describes the impact of EU competition law on Hungarian competition policy based on Hungary’s two decades of membership of the European Union, but also explains how Hungarian competition law has contributed to the development of EU competition law.
