Unique Classical Music Festival to Take Place in Szeged

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.09.23.

A classical music festival will be held in Szeged from Monday in connection with the feast of Saint Gerard, the first bishop of the Szeged-Csanád diocese, announced the organizers.

The aim of the concert series is to invite the Hungarian audience from across the border to a classical music event that expresses and strengthens the cross-border relationship between faith and art. The festival, running until October 2, will feature works that further enrich the rich musical life of Szeged and are true classical music rarities.

The unique acoustics of the Szeged Cathedral provide a special atmosphere for the concerts.

The festival opens on Monday with a chamber concert by pianist Soma Balázs-Piri and violinist Yoon-Hee Kim. The Szeged-born pianist, who is currently a student at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, will perform works by Chopin, while the young Korean violinist will perform two solo works by Bach.

The following day, guests will be treated to a baroque evening. Conducted by Mónika Tóth, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations for Baroque Trio and Basso continuo will be performed by Gianni Maraldi (bass violin), Michal Stahel (cello) and Dóra Pétery (harpsichord).

For a few years now, the festival has also included a guest concert in Budapest.

On September 27, the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra, opera singer Anastasia Churakova, violinist Eun Che Kim, pianist Itai Navon and Chinese-born cellist LiLa will perform Mozart works in the Great Hall of the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.

The evening, featuring the Haffner Symphony in two movements – exactly as it was performed in the only performance of the work in Mozart’s lifetime – will be conducted by the festival’s artistic director Yoon Kuk Lee.

The concert will also be performed the next day in the Szeged Cathedral.

The festival’s closing concert will feature Klára Würtz and Kristóf Baráti, who will perform Beethoven’s Sonata No. 8 for violin and piano in the first part, followed by Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings with the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra.
