The recent Tagesschau (daily news) program of the German public television highlighted the growing trend of Germans moving to Hungary, driven by dissatisfaction with progressive-liberal policies back home, particularly regarding refugee management, writes Mandiner.
The report emphasized the increasing German community around Lake Balaton, where demand for real estate is surging. A local real estate agent noted that many Germans no longer feel at home in Germany, prompting them to seek security and a different lifestyle in Hungary.
Underlying this migration trend are concerns about safety and dissatisfaction with current political policies in Germany.
For instance, Stefan Rebs, who relocated with his family, expressed a sense of safety in Hungary, stating he felt uneasy allowing his wife and child to venture out alone in Germany due to migration-related fears. Many Germans relocating share similar sentiments, feeling disconnected from their homeland.
Economically, the report touched on the perception that the working population in Germany may soon struggle to enjoy the same level of prosperity as retirees, especially as California’s economy is catching up with Germany’s in terms of GDP.
The Tagesschau report underscores a significant demographic shift, as Germans seek a sense of security and community in Hungary, driven by political dissatisfaction and economic concerns, while also expressing a deep ambivalence about their home country.
