Justice Minister Calls for EU Legal Reform to Enhance Transparency and Competitiveness

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.09.18.

Minister of Justice, Bence Tuzson criticized the European Union’s legislative system, stating that it burdens national legal frameworks and creates a lack of transparency.

Speaking at the Bratislava Law Forum alongside his V4 (Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland) counterparts, Mr. Tuzson stressed the need for reform in the EU to enhance legal and economic competitiveness.

The minister’s criticism centers on the complexity of the EU’s legislative order, which he claims leads to an overwhelming amount of regulations that hinder national legal systems. According to him, this proliferation of laws reduces clarity and makes it difficult for member states to efficiently adapt to EU rules. He remarked,

the EU’s legislative order results in a proliferation of legislation that impacts national legal systems, which, in the end, leads to a lack of transparency.”

On legal and economic competitiveness, Bence Tuzson emphasized the importance of simplifying EU legislation to maintain the bloc’s global standing against powers like China and the U.S. He also highlighted the need for continued cooperation within the V4 countries and cautioned against political fragmentation, stressing that despite differences, these countries must protect their shared interests.

The Minister of Justice also raised concerns about the European Court of Justice, accusing it of a lack of transparency and making arbitrary judgments, such as Hungary’s EUR 200M fine. He criticized the opaque process of judge appointments and decision-making in the court.

Bence Tuzson called for significant reforms, pointing out that Hungary has already begun making its legal system more transparent through the development of a law repository supported by artificial intelligence.
