As a result of a competition with the participation of prestigious Hungarian and international firms, the designer of the new exhibition building of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Debrecen (eastern Hungary) will be selected.

According to the plans, “the new museum building will be an innovative and iconic architectural solution, able to present the natural science content in a forward-looking form, and will be open to visitors after the investment.”

The Hungarian Natural History Museum currently operates from three sites in Budapest.

Most of the professional background work is carried out in two infrastructurally obsolete areas, not well suited for the storage of artifacts and fall far short of international museum standards. The institution’s collections and professional community are world-class, and the government is committed to finding suitable accommodation for the museum.

As a result of the thorough preparatory work and studies carried out over the past period, the new Debrecen exhibition building of the Natural History Museum will be able to find a worthy home in the Nagyerdő (nature reserve with special endangered plant and animal species). The new museum, to be located in the place of the Oláh Gábor Street Stadium, will fit perfectly into the unique fabric of the Nagyerdő, closely linked to the natural environment, free from human interference, and at the same time will be the city’s main recreational area and scientific center.

The project will create a major cultural, scientific and community institution in Central Europe, one of Europe’s most modern and largest natural history exhibition spaces.

The building will not only be a modern, innovative, environmentally conscious and world-class exhibition space, but also a place for all-day experiences that will meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s museum-going trends.

The Natural History Museum, as a prestigious base for national and international scientific research, will continue its mission to awaken and sustain the need to know and understand the diversity of nature and to engage its visitors in the preservation of the natural environment. Its knowledge transfer program will provide opportunities for everyone to learn about knowledge, environmental education and science education.

According to the announcement,

in order to ensure the high quality implementation of the project, Debrecen Infrastructure Development is launching a two-phase international design competition

on behalf of the city to design the new exhibition building, for which submissions are invited from domestic design offices as well as from the best foreign designers. After the first pre-qualification phase, 14 foreign and Hungarian design offices will be invited to participate. In the second phase, firms have until January 7, 2025 to submit their entries, which will be selected by a jury of distinguished national and international experts. The total prize money for the competition is EUR 330,000.

The competition website is available here.
