Former Ambassador to Paris: “The Sovereignty of a Country Cannot Be Bought with Money”

Hungary Today 2024.09.05.

According to former ambassador to Paris, György Károlyi, Hungary has successfully tackled illegal immigration, unlike the EU. Instead of receiving praise, Hungary is being punished, he said in an interview with Boulevard Voltaire.

György Károlyi, who served as ambassador from 2015 to 2021, noted that the European Commission had requested a fine of EUR 7 M and a daily penalty of EUR 15,000 from the Court of Justice. However, the Court imposed a EUR 200 M fine and a daily penalty of EUR 1 M, far exceeding the initial request. He questioned the legal basis for such a decision, arguing,

there is no criminal code in the EU specifying penalty areas for certain offenses, allowing for complete arbitrariness.”

The former Ambassador criticized the Court of Justice of the European Union, suggesting it operates more as a political body than a judicial one, supporting the Commission’s agenda rather than impartial justice. “If it is comparable to civil law, why does the court impose damages 29 times and 67 times higher than what was demanded?” György Károlyi asked.

He also pointed out the irony that Hungary, which effectively manages illegal immigration, is fined and subjected to budget withholding, while the EU struggles with the issue itself.

The sovereignty of a country cannot be bought with money,”

he emphasized, reaffirming Hungary’s commitment to its migration policy and protection of children from LGBTQIA+ content.

Mr. Károlyi concluded that this approach could harm the European Union by imposing political positions on member states, potentially leading to increased resistance and undermining European unity and cohesion.
