The new Cupra Terramar, which will soon go into production at Audi Hungaria‘s Győr plant (northwestern Hungary), was unveiled in Barcelona on Wednesday. Some of the new models have already been produced in the Hungarian city, and series production will start in the near future, with a capacity of around 300 units per day. The Spanish brand’s new model will also be available with different engine options, Világgazdaság points out.
The Hungarian automotive company announced back in 2022 that it would expand its vehicle production portfolio with a new model from another Group brand.
Michael Breme, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria, told MTI that the Terramar will be built on the same platform as the Audi Q3, which will reduce investment costs and keep production levels high.
The Q3 and the Terramar are produced by around 3,000 people in Győr,
he added.
The chairman emphasized that there are no plans to produce models from other brands for the time being, and that capacity utilization with the Q3 and Terramar models is close to 100 percent.
Zoltán Les, Member of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria responsible for vehicle production, said that they have been working on integrating the Terramar into the production system for over two years, and have used every major downtime to do so. The biggest transformation has been in the body shop, where modifications have been made in almost every production cell, but there have also been major rebuilding works in the paint shop and the assembly plant.
After the production of hundreds of pre-series vehicles, large-scale production will soon begin. The model will have a market launch of 3,700 units, after which it will be produced at a rate of around 300 units per day.
In Győr, the plan is to produce 770 vehicles per day, 60 percent of which will be Audi Q3s and 40 percent Cupra Terramars.
The Terramar will be available with five different powertrains in three different technologies, petrol, mild hybrid and the new generation plug-in hybrid. Both the petrol and mild hybrid engines will be produced in Győr, Zoltán Les pointed out.
According to a Cupra statement, the Terramar is a sporty SUV that is the next stage in the brand’s growth journey. Deliveries of the model will start in the last quarter of this year. The Spanish car brand was founded in 2010 and became an independent brand in 2018. The company has delivered more than 650,000 cars since 2018.
The sporty, boldly designed SUV will be produced with different engine options in the city on the banks of the Rába river:
The weakest version will have 150 horsepower, the most powerful 272 horsepower.
The price of the vehicle is not yet known, however, the Terramar is the Spanish sister model to the new Volkswagen Tiguan that debuted last year, therefore some conclusions can be drawn. The basic model of the Tiguan starts at HUF 15 million (EUR 38,200), while the plug-in hybrid is around HUF 17.5-20.7 million (EUR 44,559-52,707).
The German base price for the Terramar, including 19 percent local tax, is EUR 43,020. For comparison, the 130 horsepower Tiguan costs EUR 37,150 in Germany, while the 150 horsepower version starts at EUR 41,655, HVG reports.
