BMW Builds Hungary’s Largest Solar Power Plant in Debrecen

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.09.04.

BMW is building the largest solar power plant in Hungary and the largest of its group of companies in Debrecen (eastern Hungary), once again confirming that Hungary has become the absolute global leader of the green economy of the future, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó emphasized on Tuesday at the site.

The minister said at the groundbreaking ceremony of the solar park of BMW Manufacturing Hungary that the 71 football field photovoltaic system will be the largest within the group and will also be Hungary’s largest industrial solar power plant.

“And as far as I understand it, E.ON has never built a solar farm as big as the one we are building here. The collaboration between two German companies and Debrecen, Hungary, is once again producing an achievement that can rightfully claim a place in next year’s edition of the Guinness World Records,” he stressed.

Mr Szijjártó also underlined that Hungary has become the absolute global leader of the green economy of the future, which he said rests on two main pillars:

the electrification of transport and the decarbonization of energy production.

“These are two areas where Hungary is leading the way by global standards, and I think it is most appropriate to say this here in Debrecen,” he noted. “Because Hungary is where Europe’s top automotive companies make their electric motors and cars. And it is here in Hungary that the largest electric battery companies produce the electric batteries, without which there is no electric car,” the politician pointed out.

“On the other hand, industry in Hungary is also building and using more and more solar power plants. Together, BMW and Hungary are building a modern, sustainable and green future here in Debrecen,” he said.

After all, in a few months’ time, BMW cars built on a pure electric platform will roll off the production lines here for the first time,

and this is where the greatest integration of solar energy into production will take place, as more than a quarter of the energy needs will be served by this solar park,” Péter Szijjártó added.

The cooperation between BMW and Debrecen has now led to Debrecen being one of the most developed cities in the Central European region. “Debrecen is one of the most attractive investment centers in the Central European region and we can safely say that it has become one of the European centers of the new global automotive industry,” he highlighted.

The minister added that last year the production value of the automotive industry was already over HUF 13,000 billion (EUR 33 billion), and for the sixth year in a row Hungary is among the world’s top 20 automotive exporters. At the same time, he said, it was at least as much of an achievement that all this had been achieved while continuously reducing emissions, which was possible thanks to the expansion of green energy capacities.

According to the information provided, 278,000 domestic and nearly 3,500 industrial solar power plants are currently in operation in Hungary. “We have planned that by 2030 the solar energy capacity in Hungary will reach 6,000 megawatts. In comparison, we are now at 6,700 megawatts,” he concluded.
