September 1 marked the start of the Éva Marton International Singing Competition, which was first held ten years ago. Éva Marton, Hungarian opera singer and Kossuth Prize winner, recipient of the Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary and the title of Artist of the Nation spoke about the competition and the opportunities that follow on Kossuth Radio‘s Calendar program. The world-famous opera singer is also a co-founder of the Friends of Hungary Foundation (MOBA), publisher of news portals, Hungary Today and Ungarn Heute.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the launch of the Éva Marton International Singing Competition, the first of its kind in Hungary to be admitted to the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC), writes Magyar Nemzet. Over 60 artists, including six Hungarians, will compete in the competition, which will be held between September 1 and 8 this year and will be met with great interest from all over the world, emphasized Éva Marton, a guest of Kossuth Radio.
The world star dramatic soprano also revealed that she is well acquainted with the mental state of young people in this situation. Looking back to the beginning of her own career, she said that she always had the feeling that she wanted to be as good as possible. “You have to be very persistent, you have to travel a lot, you have to be able to work with a lot of unknown people. As a singer, you have to learn to be able to fill unfamiliar venues with your voice in no time, working with the orchestra.”
She considers the right family background and professional training to be the most important.
“I had plans for several years. I always knew which role I had to prepare for the following year and in which order. I did not rush, I worked in blocks. In Chicago, I sang Siegfried twelve times in a row, and each time was different, each time there was something new for me, too,” stressed Éva Marton, to whom young singers often turn for encouragement.
One of the new things she mentioned during Kossuth Radio‘s program was the institutional launch of the Éva Marton Opera Studio at the Hungarian State Opera House in September, where students will receive real practical training.
This is a great opportunity for aspiring singers.
