The Hungarian government has voiced strong opposition to the European Union’s migration policies, arguing that they impose excessive demands on Hungary.
The Parliamentary Secretary of State of the Ministry of Interior, Bence Rétvári, articulated Hungary’s stance on migration during an interview on Kossuth Radio’s Vasárnapi újság program.
Hungary rejects the EU’s push for the country to handle a disproportionate share of illegal migrant applications, which they argue would lead to migrant ghettos. The Secretary of State emphasized that since 2015, the country has adhered strictly to its policy of protecting its borders in accordance with Hungarian and EU legislation. He stated:
we respect Hungarian and EU legislation, which makes it clear that borders must be protected, and that it is not possible to cross the green border illegally without documents.”
Mr. Rétvári also criticized the EU’s financial penalties for non-compliance with its migration policies, calling them “political pressure, blackmail, to get Hungary to let the migrants in,” rather than legal consequences.
Hungary is seeking to resolve these disputes through international legal channels, using experts to assert its claims. The Secretary of State argued that the EU’s current handling of migration undermines the Schengen agreement, which was intended to allow free movement within Europe but has been compromised by internal border controls due to inadequate protection of the EU’s external borders.
He highlighted the ineffectiveness of the EU’s expulsion policies, noting that
the logic of letting people in who have no legal right to stay and then deporting them has not worked over the last ten years.”
Hungary remains firm in its stance against mass illegal migration and insists on protecting its borders and national sovereignty. The government is exploring international legal solutions to challenge EU policies and defend its position against what it perceives as undue political pressure.
