Open Air Museum to Celebrate “the Women with a Thousand Faces”

Hungary Today 2024.08.14.

The festive program of the Hungarian Open Air Museum (Szentendre Skanzen) during the national holiday, on August 19-20, will be linked to the feast of the Assumption of Mary (August 15), writes Turizmus.com.

The biggest feast of Mary in the Catholic Church is also the feast of the patron saint of Hungary, which is nowadays a feast for all women in a broader sense. In connection with the feast, the museum will present the diversity of women’s existence and women’s life paths, starting from the traditional roles of women and the customs of peasant society.

Young and old alike will be able to try their hand at handicrafts that were traditionally done by women. As well as baking bread, they can learn how to churn butter, hand-wash and weave.

The museum also seeks answers to the question of what it meant to be a woman in the past and today.

“For me, a woman is…” is the title of a modern community outdoor workshop where anyone can draw or paint what the term means to them.

On August 20, Noémi Szécsi will talk with author Tamara Faár about the changing roles and life paths of women. The discussion will not just be about peasant life, but also about the learning opportunities, the preparation for the role of wife, the work of maids, workers, middle-class wives and aristocratic ladies.

On the same day, the museum will host the Igazgyöngy Foundation, which works to eradicate child poverty. In the courtyard of the museum’s ‘Undi House,’ a charity event will be organized to help women living in menstrual poverty, as it is estimated that there are thousands of women in Hungary who cannot afford hygiene products.

The museum, with the support of the Igazgyöngy Foundation, also wants to raise awareness of the situation of women living in extreme poverty.
