Men’s Water Polo Team Reaches Olympic Semi-Finals in Tight Match

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.08.

Men’s water polo team triumphed over Italy 12-10 in penalties during the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics, securing a spot in the semi-finals. Goalkeeper Soma Vogel, with key saves, and Krisztián Manhercz, scoring five goals and the decisive penalty, were instrumental in the victory.

In a match marked by intense back-and-forth action, the Hungarian team initially took the lead through Manhercz’s efforts. After two minutes, he set the tone with a long-range goal and later converted a five-meter penalty drawn by Dénes Varga. Despite Italy’s Andrea Fondelli hitting the post on a penalty, Italy capitalized on consecutive penalties, narrowing Hungary’s lead to 3-2 by the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw a goalless stretch of over five minutes until Italy’s Francesco Condemi scored, but his goal was disallowed after a video review ruled it violent conduct.

Hungary, with a four-minute man advantage, capitalized on a penalty from Manhercz, bringing the score to 4-2.

The third quarter was tightly contested. Italy equalized by half-time with goals from Di Fulvio and Echenique, while Hungary struggled offensively. Echenique’s goal early in the fourth quarter put Italy ahead, but Hungary’s Fekete and Zalánki responded, equalizing at 8-8. Hárai drew a foul, leading to another penalty converted by Manhercz. Italy tied the match again with a goal from Presciutti, sending the game to penalties.

In the shootout, Vogel’s remarkable saves and goals from Vámos, Zalánki, and Manhercz secured the win.

Previously, Hungary defeated Italy in the European Championship group stage but lost in the semi-finals. They also performed well in the World Cup group stage in Doha.

Coach Zsolt Varga praised his team’s resilience: “it was a tough match; congratulations to both teams. We played with great heart.” Manhercz, reflecting on the team’s journey, said,

it was a hectic game. I am happy we managed to change our momentum after the third quarter.”

Szilárd Jansik added, “I am on an emotional rollercoaster. That is why we are a team with a capital ‘A’; if someone makes a mistake, someone else steps up.” With determination and teamwork, our men’s water polo team advances to the semi-finals, ready to face Croatia.
