Hungary and Slovakia have filed a complaint against Ukraine with the European Commission, alleging violations of the Association Agreement, reports Index.
The issue stems from Ukraine’s sanctions preventing the transport of oil from Russia’s Lukoil, which threatens Hungary’s exemption from EU sanctions and risks long-term energy security. Despite the severity, the European Commission has not convened a consultation forum, leading to accusations of bias towards Ukraine, which is not an EU member.
Századvég Foundation’s expert, Olivér Hortay criticized the Commission for not addressing the complaint, stating that Brussels’ inaction undermines the spirit of EU energy market integration and the interests of its member states.
The move is against the interests of Hungary and Slovakia—which the Commission should represent,” Mr. Hortay said, emphasizing that this could erode trust in the EU’s energy market rules.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó warned that if it is proven that the European Commission is jeopardizing EU members’ energy security, it would represent an unprecedented issue in recent years.
He highlighted that Brussels’ apparent support for Ukraine over EU members could have serious implications for the faith in EU governance and legal frameworks.
