This Year Saw the Hottest July since 1901

This July was the hottest and the seventh driest since 1901, HungaroMet said on its website on Monday.

HungaroMet’s summary data of July shows that the national average mean temperature for the month was 24.53 degrees Celsius, 3.0 degrees above the average for the years 1991-2020, making it the warmest July since 1901.

The average mean temperature was above 25 degrees Celsius in large areas of eastern Transdanubia and southern Great Plain, and even reached 26 degrees Celsius in smaller areas.

Elsewhere, in the lowlands, temperatures ranged between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius, while monthly averages below 20 degrees Celsius were only recorded in the highest mountains.

The national average for July this year was only 0.01 degrees below the average temperature for August 1992, the hottest month since the beginning of the 20th century.

The average temperature for July 2024 was mostly above the monthly mean for August 1992 in the southern half of the country. Meanwhile, in the northern and north-western counties it was generally below the monthly mean for August 1992.

In addition to the persistent hot weather, last month was also very dry, the seventh driest July since the beginning of the 20th century on a national average.

The month’s rainfall averaged just 22.2 millimeters nationally, according to data received so far, 69 percent below the average of 71.8 millimeters for the years 1991-2020. While there were localized monthly rainfall events of more than 50 millimeters, most of the country received less than 30 millimeters.

In many areas, especially in the Transdanubian region, monthly precipitation was less than 5 millimeters, making this the driest July since the beginning of the 20th century in large areas of the region, but that similarly low monthly precipitation also occurred further east. Some weather stations recorded no precipitation at all in July.
