Free Driver’s License Program for High School Graduates Starts in September

Hungary Today 2024.08.06.

Starting in autumn, the government will start the free state driver’s license (B category) program for high school graduates, with theoretical training provided through e-learning and practical training conducted by retrained military servicemen.

According to HVG, this program will benefit 100,000 graduating students from September. However, 281 public education institutions will face challenges due to the new regulations, which impose administrative burdens on schools to facilitate the training and testing. Schools will be responsible for providing IT infrastructure for e-learning and administering both theoretical and practical tests.

The program will cover both theoretical and practical training costs, but there is some ambiguity about whether examination fees will be fully covered.

The draft regulation indicates that while theoretical and practical training will be free, students can receive state support for examination fees up to HUF 50,000 (EUR 125).

Previously, financial support for obtaining a driving license was capped at HUF 25,000 (EUR 62) for those under 20, but this will now be doubled. The major cost—practical training hours—will be covered by the state.

The Hungarian Defense Forces will handle practical training, with additional funds allocated to the Ministry of Defense for designated staff and equipment. The plan involves using soldiers as driving instructors and possibly for other roles, due to a shortage of teachers and instructor trainers.
