On the Hungarian expressways operated by MKIF Zrt. (“Hungarian Concession Infrastructure Development Company”), over 1.8 million square meters of the country’s 98 different points were replaced with new asphalt by August 1 this year.
According to the company’s press release, about 480 kilometers of lanes of the seven national expressways (M1, M15, M3, M30, M35, M4, M7) have been renewed so far this year, including several places of the interchange branches and rest areas. This has involved the use of 300,000 tons of asphalt. In addition, 72 bridges and overpasses, as well as 9 rest areas have been renewed across the country in the last four months.
The largest expressway upgrade in Hungary’s history started in 2023 and will continue until 2025.
This covers 43 percent of the 1,237 kilometers of main roads taken over by MKIF for operation, renewal and upgrading, which means 538 kilometers. Over the 3 years, 200 bridges and overpasses will be renewed, and the drainage systems and possible gullies of 50-60 junctions will be repaired. In 2023, 19 percent of the main roads was given new asphalt, and where necessary, not only the wearing course but also the underlying binder course and deeper structural parts will be replaced and repaired.
By the end of this year, another 20 percent of the main roads is scheduled for renewal.
The press release points out that in August, due to increased transit traffic on the M1 and M7, there will be no asphalt works planned in either direction.
