Budapest Theater Holds the World Premier of Woody Allen’s New Play

Hungary Today 2024.08.01.

Directed by Máté Szabó, “Brooklyn Tale,” written by Woody Allen during the COVID-19 pandemic, will have its world premiere at the Belvárosi Theater in Budapest. The main roles are played by Máté Mészáros, Zsuzsa Járó, and Milán Schruff.

As Index‘s article writes, the story follows a gangster and his family as they come into possession of a stolen Raphael painting sought by all of Europe. The painting ends up in the hands of a crafty fence and soon finds itself on the wall of a Mafia boss’s room.

Can art make us better? Can what is perfect lead the guilty in the right direction?” Woody Allen explores these questions in his new play, written during the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Allen reveals the full range of human frailty and greatness with his characteristic insight and humor. Orlai Production expressed great pride in hosting the world premiere, marking the first time Hungarian audiences will see the play.

The main cast includes Máté Mészáros, Zsuzsa Járó, Judit Cseh, Milán Schruff, Lili László, Dominika Panna Bíró, Barnabás Rohonyi, Barnabás Dékány, Martin Mészáros, and Béla Ficzere. The production is directed by Máté Szabó, with the Hungarian text by Gergely Zöldi, set design by Csörsz Khell, and costumes by Györgyi Szakács.
