Viktória Traub’s Animated Short Film Qualifies for the Oscars

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.30.

Viktória Traub’s animated short film “Shoes and Hooves” (“Cipők és paták”) won the Best Animated Film award at the Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico. Thanks to the Mexican award, the Hungarian film is now eligible to enter the 2025 Oscars in the Best Animated Short Film category.

As the National Film Institute (NFI) writes in its statement, Viktória Traub’s animated short film “Shoes and Hooves” is set in a surreal, hybrid world populated by human-animal creatures and explores the dilemmas of connection, conformity and self-acceptance. Its protagonist is Paula, a centaur-girl who, as a small-town pedicurist, longs to have human feet. When she meets Arnold, the crocodile-man, they fall in love at first sight.

Will the centaur-girl be able to find her way back to her own identity? What is the price of conformity and self-abandonment?” – these are the questions that this short film, made with 2D animation, seeks to answer.

Viktória Traub, director, graduated from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in 2008. She is currently a PhD student in multimedia at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and a teaching assistant at the Eszterházy Károly University in Eger. Since 2008 she has been working as a freelance designer and animation director.

Her films “Iron Egg” (“Vastojás”) and “Mermaids and Rhinos” (“Sellők és rinocéroszok”) have been screened at festivals around the world, the latter was awarded the Best Animated Film of 2018 by the Hungarian Film Critics Association.

“Shoes and Hooves” debuted at the most prestigious festival, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June, and has since been touring renowned festivals worldwide, next competing in Viborg, Denmark, and then at the animation film festival in Ottawa.

“Shoes and Hooves” was produced by Pi Productions with support from NFI and TV Paint, co-produced with Solaz Media and Paprika Studios. Post-production works were done at the NFI Film Lab. The music was composed by Csaba Kalotás, the screenplay was co-written by the director Zsuzsanna Bak and Polett Dus, the animation sound designer is Zoltán Vadon, and the producer is Polett Dus.
