Boxer Richárd Kovács Advances to the Olympics Quarter-finals

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.29.

Richárd Kovács (63.5 kg) secured a victory with consensual points at the Paris Olympics, advancing to the quarter-finals being in the 16 best boxers.

Competing in the Arena Nord de Paris, Kovács faced Hardy Garside, an Australian lightweight bronze medalist from the Tokyo Games, in a highly anticipated match. Despite a cautious start with few punches landed, Kovács quickly adapted to his opponent’s style. By the second round, he used effective counterattacks to dominate the match, with all five judges favoring him.

In the final round, Kovács maintained his confidence and composure, ultimately winning on unanimous points and moving one step closer to a medal.

Reflecting on his performance, he said, “I was a little nervous in the first minute of the first round, although I had a good warm-up, but then I started to relax in the second minute, and from then on, I enjoyed every moment of the match.

I felt in the ring that I had my way; my opponent could not pick up the rhythm he wanted.”

Despite his growing confidence, Richárd Kovács emphasized the importance of staying focused due to the close score. “I really needed the third round, so I tried to stay focused. But towards the end, I felt that I was going to win the match because I hit a lot more than my rival. I am happy to be here and to prove myself and my little boy that I really want to bring home a medal, which is only one match away. I will have to face a very good opponent on Thursday, but my coaches and I will try to prepare for it as best as possible.”

His next challenge will be against Sofiane Oumiha, the hosts’ three-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist, in the quarter-finals.
