On the evening of July 24, this year’s higher education thresholds were published, deciding how many students will be admitted to university and college in Hungary. The University of Debrecen is a favorite among foreign students, with around 2,000 new students from other countries coming to the university this year.
Including the newly admitted students, a total of over 7,500 foreign students will start their studies at the institution from September, Világgazdaság reports. Elek Bartha, deputy rector of education at the University of Debrecen, said that
the university is known to have the largest number of foreign students among Hungarian higher education institutions.
The student community from more than 100 countries around the world is offered English-language courses in more than 80 majors. According to Elek Bartha, this year’s admissions process has continued the positive trend of previous years in terms of the number of applicants and admissions. He indicated that an important element of the university’s strategy is to strengthen its international image in the field of education and research.
Last year’s record enrolment will be exceeded this year. The high number of applications contributed to the institution’s continued popularity in the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program,
with this year’s figures exceeding the record number of applications in 2023 by more than 15 percent.
In addition, the number of applications for the university’s fee-paying courses increased by 22 percent compared to last year.
The university’s Coordinating Center for International Education registered more than 31,000 applications overall. Following the decision of the Board of Trustees of the Tempus Public Foundation, 753 students were awarded the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, meaning that, including those on fee-paying courses, approximately 2,000 students will start their studies in September. Overall, around 7,500 international students will be able to study at the University of Debrecen in a foreign language in the academic year 2024/25.
