Ekho Architect Studio has developed plans to renovate the historic Avas Truncated Tower (Avasi Csonkatorony) and its surroundings in Szigliget (northern shore of Lake Balaton), writes Index.
The Municipality of Szigliget has announced a public procurement for the project, aiming to conserve the church ruins, the surrounding cemetery, and retaining walls. The plans also include constructing a visitors’ center with a 100 square meter exhibition space and building a cycle path linking the main Balaton path to the beach.
The Avasi Tower, the oldest monument in Szigliget, features Romanesque architecture from the 13th century, with a free-standing basalt nave and an octagonal tower with a pointed stone top.
The renovation will involve preservation works, including the cemetery and landscape around the church. A visitors’ center with covered and open spaces for events, workshops, and screenings will be added at the rear of the site.
The design aims to create a large green space facing Lake Balaton and the reed beds, complementing the Árpád-era (1000-1301) church in siting, size, and materials. Plans include reinforcing the retaining walls, building stairs, and establishing a lookout point. The garden will feature historical elements such as fruit trees, vines, and herbs, with shaded pergolas. Additionally, a cycle path will connect to the Szigliget Municipal Beach.
Architects have five months from the contract’s start to complete the design work.
