The assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s presidential candidate, is the result of the current political culture that believes that political opponents are a threat to the nation and democracy, and therefore any means are permissible against them, the Prime Minister’s Political Director told Kossuth Radio on Monday.
It is worth listening to the daily communication of liberal politicians in Brussels that if the right wing comes to power it is a threat to democracy, Balázs Orbán recalled. This rhetoric is an excuse for all extremists: if one wants to prevent the return of evil, all means are permitted, he added.

This should not become part of the political culture, the politician emphasized. “One can criticize each other, but human dignity is key. At the same time, it must be recognized that, for example
in Hungary, Europe and America, as a result of democratic processes, people do not want to accept certain liberal, pro-war and pro-migration policies.”
He recalled that on Thursday, when the Hungarian delegation had dinner with Donald Trump in Florida, he had also discussed the fact that U.S. politics had become definitively unstable. Balázs Orbán said that while it was common for America to criticize the domestic policies of other countries, it was clear that there was unprecedented division and calls for violence in America. “Obviously, it is not good to claim that the victory of one’s political opponent is a threat to the nation, a threat to democracy,” he underlined.
We’ve seen where this kind of hate-mongering leads. It’s time to put an end to it! pic.twitter.com/nd3ZxyAgQn

Mr Orbán went on to stress that while there is no direct fighting in the European Union or the West, only in Ukraine, the West is quite clear that it is at war with Russia and that all means are permitted in war. In other words, anyone who opposes the war consensus is an internal enemy against whom all means are permitted. This is the dominant approach in the Western press towards pro-peace politicians, and it is spilling over into Hungary, he noted.
Hungary should be preserved as an island of peace and these extremist approaches should be kept outside the country’s borders,
he highlighted.
Slovak Prime Minister Rober Fico also expressed his views on the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, criticizing the independent press. He reacted to the attack by saying that the script had been copied, referring to the assassination attempt on him in May. Fico lashed out at the independent press in a Facebook post: “If the shooter had known Slovak, he would have read Denník N, SME or Aktuality to get in the mood to “take down” the disobedient U.S. president.
According to Fico, Trump’s political opponents are trying to lock him up, and if that fails,
they will get people so angry that some unfortunate will take up arms.”
He then cynically added that: “Now we will witness speeches about the need for reconciliation and forgiveness.”
