New Motorway Section to be Built, Linking up with the Romanian Border

Hungary Today 2024.07.12.

The results of the public procurement for the second phase of the M49 expressway have been announced in the European tender notice (Ted – Tenders electronic daily), Magyar Építők reports. This will allow the construction of a new section linking the M3 motorway to the Romanian border to begin.

The second section between Ököritófülpös and Csenger (eastern Hungary), as well as the design and construction of the Kocsord plant engineering works, will be carried out by Duna Aszfalt Út és Mélyépítő Zrt. The contract was concluded on June 21, 2024, the portal writes. A 17.6-kilometer stretch of the second section of the M49 will be built, bringing the expressway to the border.

The Ministry of Construction and Transport’s project will link the M3 motorway to Csenger, near the Romanian border, with the M49 providing a fast link to Satu Mare (Szatmárnémeti), on the other side of the border, and to the Partium region.

As the first element of the project, Duna Aszfalt Építő Zrt. is building a 28.15-kilometer section between the M3 and Ököritófülpös, including a bridge over the Kraszna River. On the Romanian side, as a continuation of the Hungarian M49, the Óvár-Satu Mare section is being built over 11 kilometers, for which the public procurement was announced in January this year.

The second section will be a 17.6 km four-lane road. According to Ted, the total value of the contracts is HUF 141.9 billion (EUR 361.8 million). The tender notice also reveals that 3 separate level junctions and 4 roundabouts will be created.

The project also includes the construction of a road border crossing point on the Hungarian-Romanian border.
