For the first time in Hungary, the World Rallycross Championship will be held on July 27-28 at the Nyirád Racing Center (western Hungary), alongside the European Championship, with 17 Hungarian drivers competing in four categories, the organizers announced.
At the press conference, Orsolya Gyuris, the main organizer, said that they set higher goals each year, and after the successful European Championship races of the past two years, they are now joining the highest level of the rallycross series. She emphasized that great emphasis is placed on spectator safety in Nyirád, and families are welcome to attend.
Safety changes have been made to accommodate the World Championship race, including concrete walls in the catwalk, new bumpers, and a new VIP tower for spectators, but the track remains largely unchanged.
Orsolya Gyuris detailed the program, starting with the opening ceremony at the main square in Tapolca at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, where fans can meet the cars and drivers. Friday will feature a professional day at the circuit, and races will run from 8:30 a.m. to late afternoon on Saturday and Sunday, with heats and finals on both days.
Top drivers from both the World and European Championships will compete at Nyirád. This marks the tenth European Championship race at the Nyirád Racing Center.
Tamás Végh, driving a Volkswagen Polo in the RX3 class, aims to reach the finals. Balázs Körmöczi, also in the VW Polo category, is aiming for a podium finish, citing track knowledge and fan support as advantages. Sámuel Kovács, driving a Skoda Fabia, debuted in RX3 with a third place in the European Championship in Höljes, Sweden. He aims to reach the finals and potentially the podium, considering this a learning year. Tamás Kárai, competing in RX1 with his Audi S1, also aims for a podium finish, confident in his home track advantage.
Race press officer Pál Vidu noted that 17 Hungarian drivers will compete in four categories.
Several drivers are set to compete in the upcoming event across different categories. In RX3, we have Krisztián Szabó, Joao Ribeiro representing Portugal, and Nils Volland from Germany. Janko Wieszt will make his World RX debut, while Gyula Lajos will be racing in the RX2e electric car division. Additionally, in RX1, spectators can expect to see Patrick O’Donovan of Great Britain, Sivert Svardal representing Norway, Damian Litwinowicz from Poland, and Mandie August from Germany. These drivers will all be competing together in the same event.
