Chinese President Calls for Easing Ukraine Conflict after Viktor Orbán’s Visit

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.08.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the international community and major powers to help create the necessary conditions to ease the war in Ukraine, facilitating the resumption of direct dialogue between Kiev and Moscow.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry reported that President Xi made these remarks during a meeting with Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán in Beijing, where the two leaders discussed peace proposals for the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

The Chinese Head of State congratulated Viktor Orbán on assuming the presidency of the European Union and expressed appreciation for his efforts to promote a political settlement of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

He also expressed Beijing’s readiness to maintain contact with Budapest on this issue.

Xi Jinping emphasized that an early ceasefire and a political settlement are in the interest of all parties. He stressed the importance of “calming down the situation” and outlined three principles:

the battlefield must not spread, fighting must not escalate, and neither side should further inflame the situation.”

He added, “A ceasefire in this conflict can only be achieved as soon as possible if all countries inject positive, not negative, energy into it.”

Highlighting China’s role in promoting peace talks, the President said, “China, in its own way, actively promotes peace talks, encourages, and supports all efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis.” He noted that China and Hungary share the same basic proposals and direction in their efforts, expressing readiness to stay in touch with Hungary and all concerned parties.

Looking ahead, President Xi mentioned that next year will mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union.

He pointed out that there is no geopolitical contradiction or fundamental conflict of interest between the two sides and that they should remain committed to cooperation.

The Chinese leader expressed hope that “Hungary, as the President-in-office of the European Union, will play a positive role in promoting the solid and stable development of China-EU relations and fostering constructive dialogue.”
