British Airways’ flight BA 31 from London to Hong Kong made an unscheduled landing at Liszt Ferenc International Airport in Budapest late Sunday evening due to a passenger falling ill.

The plane was overweight because of the fuel in the tanks, causing the braking system to overheat upon landing. After the aircraft came to a stop, firefighters measured the brake temperatures and immediately began cooling them. Once the brakes had returned to operating temperature, the aircraft was handed over to mechanics.

Budapest Airport stated that passengers were promptly disembarked and left the aircraft within a few minutes.

They are now waiting in the terminal for the airline’s decision on their onward journey. There were 273 passengers and 13 crew members on board. A state of emergency was briefly declared due to the overweight landing, but the situation was managed by the Budapest Airport Facilities Fire Department without the need for external assistance. One passenger was taken to the South-Pest Central Hospital after the emergency landing due to their health condition.
