The Economic Sentiment Index (ESI) worsened in June for both the euro area and the European Union, as reported by a survey from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN).
In the euro area, the ESI fell to 95.9 from 96.1 in May, while the EU’s ESI declined to 96.4 from 96.6. The Employment Expectations Indicator (EEI) weakened from 101.2 to 100.4 points in the EU and from 101.3 to 99.7 points in the euro area. Consumer sentiment improved slightly, moving from -13.2 points in May to -12.9 points in the EU and from -14.3 points to -14 points in June in the euro area.
Meanwhile, Hungary saw improvements in its economic sentiment indicators.
The ESI rose to 101.7 points in June from 98.2 points in May, and the EEI increased to 104.4 points from 103.7 points. The manufacturing index improved to -7.3 points from -11.5 points in May, and the services index rose to -2.4 points from -3.9 points. Consumer sentiment also improved, moving from -25.8 points to -25.1 points. However, the retail trade sentiment index worsened, declining from -11.3 points to -12.8 points, while the construction sentiment index fell from -19 points in May to -23.1 points in June.
