Hungary Today 2024.06.27.

Gergő Ármin Balázsi, a member of the Hungarian National Ballet, won the Benois de la Danse prize in the male dancer category, shared with Artemy Belyakov, principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Company (Moscow), Magyar Nemzet reports.

The Benois de la Danse, one of the world’s most prestigious international ballet awards, was presented at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on June 25. As Hungary Today reported, for the first time in its thirty-three year history, two artists from the Hungarian National Ballet has been nominated for the Benois de la Danse prize: Tatyjana Melnyik and Gergő Ármin Balázsi.

Balázsi has been a member of the Hungarian National Ballet since 2014 and was elected “Étoile” (“star dancer,” the highest rank of ballet dancers) of the 2022/23 season.

The Hungarian National Ballet shared on its social media page: “At the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Gergő Ármin Balázsi and Tatyjana Melnyik represented the Hungarian National Ballet, who also performed Wayne Eagling’s ‘Duet’. This year, Tamás Solymosi, Director of the Hungarian National Ballet, was invited to join the seven-member jury, which changes every year and was chaired by Svetlana Zakharova, Principal of Bolshoi Theatre and La Scala.”

The award is a great honor, as it is the first time in the 30-year history of the prize that a Hungarian artist has been awarded it.

The Hungarian State Opera announced the Hungarian success on Facebook. As they wrote, the Hungarian Bronze Medal winner, Junior Prima Prize winner and holder of the Étoile title in the 2022/23 season, earned the award for her performance in the previous season’s production of “The Pygmalion Effect.”

The Benois de la Danse, founded in 1991 by the International Dance Association, is awarded annually to the artists who have shown the most outstanding performance in dance during the previous year. In addition to the best choreographers, it also honors ballet dancers in both the male and female categories, regularly awards a lifetime achievement prize and recognizes the work of designers and composers.
