As we earlier reported, compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance requirements will extend to micro-mobility devices in Hungary, including electric scooters and Segways.

The Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies (Mabisz) announced that this new regulation set to take effect on July 16. Under these rules, vehicles powered by small electric engines and not human force, such as certain electric scooters, must now be insured based on their net weight and design speed.

Patrik Veres, an advisory expert at Grantis Hungary Zrt., explained further details regarding the insurance requirements for electric scooters.

According to the new provision, electric scooters weighing more than 25 kilograms or capable of speeds exceeding 25 kilometers per hour must obtain compulsory insurance.

Even those under 25 kilograms but with speeds exceeding 14 kilometers per hour are subject to the same insurance mandate.

Mr. Veres noted that while some insurers have already set their premiums for electric scooters, others are awaiting the final government decree to finalize their rates. Currently, annual vehicle insurance rates for electric scooters vary significantly, ranging from a few thousand forints to several hundred thousand forints.

This disparity arises from insurers categorizing these vehicles differently before the official regulation, similar to high-risk vehicles like those used for test drives.

The introduction of these new insurance requirements aims to regulate the use of electric scooters and other micro-mobility devices more effectively under Hungarian law. Operators of these vehicles are advised to ensure compliance with the new regulations to avoid penalties and legal complications.
