Map Reveals Dog-friendly Beach Locations around the Country

Hungary Today 2024.06.24.

In the heat of summer, it is not just us who want to be near water, but our four-legged friends can also enjoy a cool splash. Luckily, there is a growing number of dog beaches for owners and their dogs, Turizmus.com reports.

As the number of dog owners in the country grows, so does the demand for dog-friendly places, including bathing locations. This year there are already 22 declared places across Hungary where people can take their dogs to the beach, according to the beach map on kutyabarathelyek.hu.

Krisztián Máté, the co-founder of the site, said that an increasing number of beaches is opening their doors to guests with dogs. The basic rule for these locations is to keep a suitable distance from the beaches that welcome only people, to ensure proper waste collection and, if necessary, to provide access to the water.

The establishment of certified dog-friendly places has a traffic boosting effect and promotes tourism in the given municipality, as the country’s 3 million dog owners represent a significant volume of domestic tourism,”

added co-founder Zsófia Hornyák-Schmidt.

It is important that the rules and regulations of dog bathing areas are respected, for instance, only dogs that have been de-wormed, properly vaccinated and chipped are allowed to use the waterfront. Dog beaches are off-limits to dogs that are sick, injured or in heat. Care must also be taken not to disturb other dogs and their owners, or the natural wildlife.

The site also provides other useful tips and advice, such as what to look out for when going to the beach with your dog:

  • Only swim in safe places. Mine pit lakes, for instance, are deep and therefore the water is cold, easily causing muscle cramps. On non-bathing beaches and underwater, sharp debris and hazardous waste can be hidden, increasing the risk of accidents. This will not happen in official bathing areas.

  • Dogs can also get burnt. Use naturally formulated, fragrance-free dog sunscreen every 4 hours. For dogs with a lack of fur or hairless breeds, provide protective clothing.
  • Do not let him in the water with a hot body. Sudden temperature changes can be dangerous, as for the owner.
