Basic Foodstuffs Become Cheaper, Meat and Egg Prices Fall

Fresh chicken prices have fallen by at least 5-10 percent, while processed turkey prices have fallen at an even faster rate of up to 20 percent, writes Világgazdaság. In the period to mid-June this year, cage eggs were 19.3 percent cheaper, while deep litter eggs cost 16.9 percent less.

The early June figures show a fall in egg prices and producer prices for pigs for slaughter and chickens for slaughter compared with the same period in 2023, according to the latest summaries of the Institute of Agricultural Economics.

Based on the data, cage eggs became 19.3 percent cheaper and deep litter eggs 16.9 percent cheaper year-on-year in the period to mid-June this year, with average prices of HUF 51.83 (EUR 0.13) and HUF 59.8 (EUR 0.13) per piece, respectively.

The producer price of chickens for slaughter fell by almost 18 percent to HUF 411 (EUR 1.04) per kilogram by the beginning of June.

The majority of fresh chicken prices were down at least 5-10 percent compared to the beginning of June 2023. Processor selling prices for turkeys for slaughter and fresh turkey meat fell even more sharply, by over 20 percent. Processor selling prices for turkeys for slaughter fell to an average of HUF 586.6 (EUR 1.48) per kilogram in June.

Domestically produced pigs for slaughter were almost 7 percent cheaper at the beginning of the month than a year ago, with a producer price of HUF 851 (EUR 2.15). In addition, processor selling prices for most raw pork also fell, although less than for chicken. Retail purchase prices for pork also fell for most of the year, according to the year-on-year comparison.
