Italy may have won springtime for Hungarian travelers, but with the onset of summer, Croatia has taken the lead in just two weeks, according to data from travel insurance policies with Bank360. Trips abroad have become longer since June and there are more car travelers, reports Turizmus.com.

Croatia was the most popular destination among those traveling abroad in the first two weeks of summer. Croatia was chosen by 16% of those with travel insurance, overtaking Italy as the clear winner in the spring months. The two summer favorites are followed by Greece, and Spain, which has moved up to fourth place, and winter favorite Austria is fifth. As in the spring, Egypt is the most popular non-European country for travel insurance, according to online data.

In the first quarter, Austria was the best performer, but data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) also showed that the number of one-day and multi-day trips increased compared to last year, and that the amount of money spent abroad during trips was significantly higher.

While during the spring most of the trips were for sightseeing (59%), in the first half of June, 57% of people were already looking for insurance for a beach holiday, a big jump from 20% in the spring.

The proportion of sightseers has fallen equivalently, with only 37% choosing a suitable travel insurance policy in the first half of June. An average of 10% took out a policy for a business trip, while 2% took out a policy in both spring and summer, specifically because they were planning to do some extreme sports abroad.

In the first weeks of the summer, 57% of those who took out travel insurance traveled by plane and 30% by car. In spring, even more people flew, but as Croatian travel increases, the proportion of car travelers automatically rises. 13% chose other means of travel, such as bus or train, and there were also a good number of motorcyclists.

Compared to the same period last spring, there was no change in the fact that most people, 39% in total, took out insurance for four or five days, whereas at the beginning of June, most people took out a holiday for eight days.
