Heat on the Rise; Highest Warning Level in Effect

Hungary Today 2024.06.20.

The heat will continue to increase with temperatures of up to 37 degrees. In addition, the highest heat warning level, level three, has been in force since yesterday, reports hirado.hu.

Experts strongly advise people to drink plenty of water and stay in the shade during the hottest hours. Due to the extreme heat, the so-called “Code Red” (Vörös Kód) has been introduced.

In addition, workers in Győr (northwestern Hungary) received chilled mineral water, sunscreen, and baseball caps. The employees of the municipal waste management company work 10-12 hours a day in the hot sun, therefore proper protection is essential, writes the portal. A week ago, measures were taken at the company to protect workers. “We have air-conditioned rooms at the waste management center, and overall we are doing everything we can to make working conditions as good as possible for our employees and workers in this particular heat,” emphasized the manager.

Attention is also being paid to people’s safety at transport stations.

Due to the level three heat warning, water is being distributed to travelers at major train and bus stations.

The homeless in the cities are also being cared for. The Támasz Foundation in Pécs (southwestern Hungary) is taking special care of people living on the streets, but is also helping the homeless in hostels to make the heat more bearable. “In our facilities, there are shady places and the opportunity to cool off,” said József Fonyó, head of the integrated facility of the Támasz Foundation Pécs.

In addition to the highest level three heat warning, the so-called “Code Red” has also been in force since 8 a.m.,

obliging all social institutions to take in people who are homeless or in need.

Attila Fülöp, Secretary of State for Welfare Policy at the Ministry of the Interior, noted that the procedure is not only a warning to social institutions, but also a warning to society. If someone sees a homeless person in trouble on the street, they should report it through the regional dispatching service,” he added. “There is room in the homeless assistance system, with a 79 percent occupancy rate nationwide and 80 percent in Budapest,” he added.

Today, “Code Red” is in effect in the northern and southern counties, tomorrow in the southern Great Plain, and in the southern Transdanubia region on Friday. Experts ask that anyone who sees a homeless person in need on the street should report it to the regional emergency services.
